Douglas
Fir Timbers
Designers
appreciate the rich visual quality of Douglas fir and enjoy its
beautiful response to fine craftsmanship
and finishing. Substantial
volumes of clear and nearly clear timber products are available
in Douglas fir in a variety grading options and textures.
Douglas
fir’s light rosy color, which darkens over time when
exposed to UV rays, is set off by its remarkably straight grain
pattern. The tough fiber holds fasteners well and it machines
to an exceptionally
smooth, glossy surface. When dry, Douglas fir retains its shape
and size without shrinking, swelling, cupping, warping, bowing
or twisting,
and generally won’t check or show a raised grain.
Free
of heart center (FOHC) is highly recommended as this allows
the timber to remain straighter. Kiln drying, including Radio
Frequency drying (RF), is available on nearly every timber
size,
insuring the
optimum results on larger timber projects. Surfaced four sides
(S4S), circle-sawn, band-sawn, rough-sawn and hand hewn textures
are available.
Pre-cut corbel end capability offers limitless decorative end
patterns to set off your design with something unique and can
be delivered
at your door ready for construction directly from our mill. Treated Douglas fir, for exterior exposure, is becoming more
attractive due to insect and fungus resistance. We offer several
treating opportunities dependent on final result expectations.
Such characteristics make Douglas fir the ideal specie of choice
for the most demanding projects. Clear coatings, transparent
lacquer, varnishes, oils, wax, bright or subdued stains, tints
or paints and enamels are all appropriate finishes.
